You’ve probably heard of biomass before, particularly as more efficient energy sources are becoming more popular to use on a daily basis. If you are considering finding a better source of energy to use in your own home, it is worth discovering more about biomass and how it can be used to create energy.
Biomass is basically a type of biological material. As such it can come from different sources. Some biomass is taken from living things, whereas other forms of biomass are created from things that once lived but do not live anymore.
There are different types of biomass available that can be used for energy, some of which are perhaps better known than others. For example one of the more widely known sources of biomass is wood. On some occasions some types of food waste can also be used to generate energy as biomass.
Advantages of Biomass
There are several advantages to generating energy with a biomass boiler. One of the main advantages is that it is a renewable way of generating energy. You may think that a wood burner – one example of biomass in action – produces a lot of smoke and thus would not be good for the environment. But this is not the case.
When trees grow they take a lot of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. When logs from those trees are burned, they give out carbon dioxide. These two amounts balance each other out and therefore you get what is known as a carbon neutral method of generating energy.
There is also a wide range of biomass boilers available to buy today. They come in all kinds of sizes and while some are designed to be hidden away out of sight, others are more appealing to the eye and thus can be positioned where they will be seen. This is another advantage of a biomass boiler if you are considering getting one.
Biomass can also be used in more than one way. For example you can have a wood burner that looks good and will heat up a room to make it warm and cosy. Alternatively you can get a biomass boiler to replace your existing boiler. This means your new boiler will take over and do the exact same job as the old one – to provide heat and hot water whenever you need it throughout your entire home. A good quality biomass system like this could produce three figure savings throughout the course of a year.
Another advantage will be gained when the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme comes into play in 2013. When this happens, those who have a biomass boiler that qualifies for the scheme could receive payments for the energy they generate in this way.
As you can see, biomass has a very important and worthwhile role to play. If you want to do your bit for the environment you should consider whether investing in energy created by biomass could be the way to go in the future.
